Splash Garden

Splash Garden is an app concept, created for gardeners who wish to keep track of watering schedules for their garden. There are several features including a search bar to look-up various plants as well as a recipes section that will populate recipes based on ingredients from your garden.

The user will be able to create a list of the plants in their garden and click/highlight each plant after watering. This information is stored according to date - the user can then go back and view the calendar to make sure their plants aren't being over- or under-watered.

Riverside Public Utilities

Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) asked me to bring a brand new user experience to the residents and utility customers of Riverside. This website blossomed from the old, 90's feel it was before. This website was designed with residents who use desktops, laptops, and mobile phones in mind.

Using inspiration from other utility websites, such as So Cal Edison and SMUD, I prototyped, designed, and developed this website from the ground-up. This design has since been used as a template of sorts to be used across all Riverside city websites. The Innovation District website breaks out of the main template and was custom designed with City branding in mind.

Riverside Fire Department

We met with the Fire deparment and assessed their needs to give the department a modern and professional online presence and to have a robust recruitment page. The website is mobile-friendly, and features a responsive organizational chart.

The Fire department was absolutely thrilled to see their newly designed website blossom out of the outdated, very lacking site it was before - quite an upgrade!

Cherry Valley Acres & Neighbors

To help bring the community together in saving the rural beauty of Cherry Valley, located in the Inland Empire, I was asked to create a logo and design and build an inviting and informative website for Cherry Valley Acres & Neighbors (CVAN).

I prototyped, designed and developed this website from the ground-up after discussing with club members how we wanted to reach the community.

The CVAN members were over the moon about their new website that illustrates their cause elegantly, while supplying useful information to the community.

LemChem Online Textbook

LemChem is an online Chemistry textbook that is fully interactive with quizzes that show instant results. As a student, not only can you instantly search for specific topics related to class, you can also keep score and check your progress while following the text.

I designed and developed this mobile- and tablet-friendly website. Although it is still a concept and a work in progress, you can visit the site to see it in action.

Research

The process of creating a beautiful and intuitive design starts with research. There are many different ways to lay out an app or a website. Research helps us to understand user behavior. Looking at data helps prioritize key elements and call to actions within the design.

Site Map

A site map is necessary for determining the navigation of an application or site. By strategically mapping out where all links and buttons take you to, you can craft the basic "infrastructure" of a site or app. A site map shows the site's heirarchy.

Sketching

Using simple pen and paper, we can draw up a rough draft of what we want the application to look like - a brainstorm. For example, we can sketch buttons, navigation, and eventually the movement of the page. What happens when this button is clicked? Should the navigation slide out from the left-side or the top? All these experiences can be sketched.

Wireframing

The next step transfers pen-and-paper drawings to a precise grid using Wireframe.cc. Wireframing consists of laying out the page on a grid to show exactly where specific elements, such as images, buttons and accordions will appear.

The user experience can also be mapped out in a wireframe with several instances showing the before and after effects. When building for mobile, you can show, for example, that a specific box will expand when clicked. For a website, you can show a button changing color on-hover, and actually specify what hex codes are being used.

Design

Let's bring our user interface to life - this is where the magic happens! Designing is one of the most fun parts of the process. Here I like to use Adobe programs to mock-up how the actual app or website will look. During this step, we get to choose colors and show what the actual images and icons will look like integrated into the app or site - awesome!

Development

I'd say development is just as fun as designing, but in a different way - it's technical. Using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other programming languages, we are able to transform the design into a fully functioning app or website. This is where all the steps come together to bring you an incredible, finished product that you can test, deploy, publish and enjoy!

Hi. I'm Elissa.

I love art & technology. What better way to fuse the two, other than to design and build beautiful UI's and awesome UX's for happy end users? I've worked professionally as a designer and developer since 2010. E-mail me or better yet, send me a message on Instagram.

  • I know my way around Adobe programs
  • I'm very well versed in HTML and CSS
  • Creativity and good communication come naturally to me
  • I like making music too. :)
